SteamRail Wanganui's Locomotives
If anyone has early photos of our locos, carriages, wagons and buildings etc (or any Wanganui Rail history) during their working careers we would love to see them.
1950 Drewry Built Locomotive

Drewry 0-4-0 locomotive. Makers number 2266. Gardner 6LW diesel engine. Built
in 1950 for Kempthorne Prosser (now Ravensdown Fertiliser) at Aramoho, Wanganui. It was then sold to Waitaki NZR as relief shunter for works at Wanganui and Feilding and later on sold to the private Hubs and Spokes Museum in Wanganui before being bought by SteamRail on 23 September 1997.

The Drewry was first ordered for Kp's on the 10 November 1947. When built it left the works on the 8 February 1950 and shipped to New Zealand on the 27 February 1950 on board the "Suffolk". These Drewry’s records are as published by the Industrial Railway Society in the UK (A big thanks to Sean Millar for passing on this information). The first photo below was when the loco was new at K.P. Wanganui Chemical Works. Diesel shunter at work with NZR wagons. Photo by J.F. Le Cren November 1951. National Archives collection. The second photo was taken by Malvern Shoemark of the loco at the KP works in the mid 1960's and the thrid photo of the Drewry was taken at the Waitaki NZR, Imlay Freezing Works by Graeme Carter on the 11 November 1987. The loco had been hired (later brought) by Waitaki NZR to cover for the Imlay Works Price loco while it was away getting re-tyred.
Altough this engine is a good runner and we have taken the rust out and repainted the loco in the blue colour a number of years ago now we currently have this loco stored due to a loose tyre on one of the wheels and a big air leak in the cab. We plan to finsh off the restoration on the other two locos first before starting on this loco again. On a good note though we have been donated (for a donation) from the Waitara group a new set of wheels/axles for the loco with thicker tyres and many other spare parts. We are also thinking of repainting this loco into its orginal colours.
1944 A & G Price Built Locomotive

This A & G Price of Thames built 0-4-0 Locomotive, Makers number 149. Has a Chevrolet 6cyl petrol engine and weight is 5 tonne. It was built in 1944. Four of these locos were built for the NZ Defence Force, with this one being based at the Army's Hopu Hopu (Ngaruawahia) Base before being transferred to the Waiouru Army Base. Its Military number is NZ 28832. We have been told that it could pull 3 full loaded L high side wagons. It is on long term loan to SteamRail from Waiouru Army Museum. We received the locomotive in 1998.

This photo was taken at the Hopu Hopu (Ngaruawahia) Army Camp about 1954. This loco is beleaved to be the one we now have at SRW.
This little loco continues to be our only runner at the moment. We a slowly doing the body work up and we have now started to repaint it back into a darker army green as requested by the Army Museum.
1964 A & G Price Built Locomotive

A & G Price of Thames built 0-4-0 Locomotive. Makers number 212, now with a Waukesha F-817-G CNG engine. Built in 1964. Ex AFFCO Imlay Freezing Works in Wanganui locomotive. The original 6LW Gardner Engine was replaced with the Waukesha CNG engine when this plant was owned by Waitaki NZR during a over hall. Bought by SteamRail on 28 February 2002.
The 4 photos below were taken of the Loco at the Imlay Works. The first two were taken by Stu brown when the loco was still in the Waitaki NZR Red colour, the third and forth photos of it in the Affco two tone blue were taken by Stephen Robson in 1995 and by Blair Jordan just before SRW brought it in 2002.
We are now well into the restoration of this loco. We are converting it from running on CNG to LPG. This will make it easier to get the gas as we can then use the portable LPG forklift bottles. Members have also been working on doing up the body work with rust removal and then repainting it back into its original red colour.
TR 113 (TMS 465)

TR 113 was built in 1964 by A&G Price of Thames (makers number 210) for the then New Zealand Railways. It is a 15 ton diesel-hydraulic loco with a 107hp Gardner 6lw engine. Its transmission is a Twin Disc Torque Converter. The loco has a maximum speed of 24km/h. This loco arrived in Wanganui on the 6 July 2010 and is privately owned by Blair Jordan. A full history report and restoration progress can be found on his website www.buzzzsrailwayworld.weebly.com
